Raj Kamal Biography

Raj Kamal was a successful music director of Bollywood during 1980’s known for the melodious music of classic movie – Chashm-e-Buddoor and Sawan Ko Aane Do. He was one among the music directors of Bollywood who used the real potential of Yesudas for Hindi movies. He has given two most memorable songs of Yesudas’ career – Classical song, kahan se aaye badara of Chashm-e-Buddoor and Chand Jaise Mukhde pe of Sawan Ko Aane Do. He directed the movie, Zakhmi Haseena in the year 2001. As a music director, another noted work of Raj kamal was Saaz, released in the year 1998. This musical movie has ten songs with music scores done by Zakir Hussain, Bhupen Hazarika, Raj Kamal and Yashwant Dev.

 

Composer Raj Kamal was born in Matoda of Rajasthan to Tulsidas on January 15, 1928 as the eldest child. His birth name was Dalpat. He changed his name to Raj kamal to work in Bollywood. Later they moved to Mumbai. He was a trained vocalist and all his compositions reflected his knowledge in Indian classical music - Chashm-e-Buddoor and Sawan Ko Aane Do for instance. Sawan Ko Aane Do was one of the noted movies of actor Arun Govil of television serial, Ramayana fame.

Raj Kamal and his wife Sagar had 6 children, namely, Chandra Kamal, Surya Kamal, Vinay Kamal, Hriday Kamal, Shubh Kamal, and a daughter. Raj Kamal's three elder sons are all composers and musicians in their own right.

 

Kaha se aaye badra of Chashm-e-Buddoor, sung by Yesudas and Hemanti Shukla pictured on Deepti Naval still remains the most memorable composition of Raj Kamal. In 1984, he has music to a Malayalam movie – Aazhi. He has also given music for a few Bollywood movies - Mera Salaam, Amma, Katha, Phulwari, Dost and Dushman, Jazbaat and Payal ki jhankar. He has also composed songs for television mythological serials like Vishnupuran and B. R. Chopra's Mahabharat. He has also composed a few bhajans sung by Narendra Chanchal.
