Pushpavathi Biography

Pushpavathi is a singer of Malayalam in the recent times, who became immensely popular with the song, Chembavoo poonellin choru of the instant hit movie of 2012 – Salt ‘n’ pepper. Her folk style of singing appealed masses and this song became an instant hit. She started singing in Malayalam since 2002. Yet it was through the title track - ‘Chembavoo poonellin choru’ that she gained popularity instantly. The appetizing lyrics of Rafeeq Ahamed and soul-stirring composition of Bijibal changed everything for its playback singer Pushpavathy.

 

Other songs sung by Pushpavathi are - Thankam Kondoru (Punchiri Mottinu) of Nakshathrakannulla Raajakumaaran Avanundoru Raajakumaari, Kaathu kaathoru of Nammal, Poondankila of Udayon, Thayirkkudam of Choonda, March Maasamaaye of Koothu, Thiruvaay Thurannu of Chandranilekkoru Vazhi and Kaaverippoom Pattanathil of God For Sale – Bhakthiprasthaanam. She has sung with top music directors of Malayalam including Bijilal (who gave her the popular song of Salt ‘n’ pepper), Afsal Yusuf and Mohan Sitara.

 

She made her magic debut with Kamal’s ‘Nammal’ with the song ‘Kaathu kathoru mazhayathu’. The song pictured on Bhavana was immensely popular. Though she got a few more offers in Malayalam, it took almost 10 years to get fame in Malayalam and it happened with the single song she sung for super hit – Salt n pepper. She also loves to compose music for films in future. Born into a middle class family in Thrissur, Pushpavathy has deep interest in music since childhood. Her father Poypadathu Raghavan inspired her a lot. She used to participate in singing competitions since school level and has won many awards as well.

 

She completed Pre-Degree from Kerala Varma College, Thrissur and then learnt classical music under Draupadi. Once she joined Chembai Music College at Palakkad and later became a B-Grade artist with the All India Radio.  She secured first rank from Music College and also won her the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award. She got work in Chetana studio which proved to be the turning point of her career. She started with, by singing chorus as well as tracks for many playback singers. she was instrumental in composing and singing in an album featuring the couplets of Kabir Das (‘Kabir Music of Harmony’) reelased in 2005.
