Prashant Pillai Biography

Prashant Pillai is an Indian music composer and background scorer who works in Malayalam and Hindi movies. Yet he predominantly works in Malayalam. Most recently he gained attention through chartbuster songs of Malayalam movie – Amen (2013), mostly known for its experimental attempts and close rhythms to tunes of boat songs of Alappuzha with Christian background. In fact, songs of Amen topped the musical charts for the year 2013. Nee Ko Njaa Cha, Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal and Anju Sundharikal are other recent hits of the year 2013 and the movies were box office hits too. David / David, Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi and Shaitan are his Bollywood attempts. He has also done Background Score for Bollywood movies like Isaaq and Sixteen and Malayalam movies - City of God, Zachariayude Garbhinikal, Nayakan, Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal, Amen, Anju Sundharikal Bombay March 12 and Nidra. He is one of the most successful young music composers of Malayalam at present.

 

He was born on September 8, 1981 and now settled in Pune. He completed his Sound engineering in Chennai and after that assisted A. R. Rahman in studios. He regards Rahman as his mentor and guide. After a short stint with him, he moved on and settled in Pune. Later he started with ad jingles around 2004. In the year 2007, Prashant scored music for Bejoy Nambiar's, critically acclaimed short film Rahu. The Sufi song, "Betaabi" of the short film was later used in Malayalam movie – City of God, composed by him.

 

Nayakan was his first commercial feature film as a music director. He debut Bollywood with Shaitan in 2011. In 2013, when Amen was released, its music and background music were new treats for music lovers and till now, Amen is regarded as his best work, which played a significant role in its blockbuster success too.  Till now, TTK Prestige-Vanitha Film Awards and Asianet Film Awards have announced Amen as the best music of year 2013.
