Pandit Niranjan Prasad Biography

Pandit Niranjan Prasad was an Indian Flautist or Bansuri player from Allahabad. He was a renowned musician of international acclaim, and belonged to Varanasi Gharana. He was a principle discipline of renowned artist Bholanath Prasanna. He was an empaneled artist of ICCR, and has worked with many music directors of Hindi film industry as a flautist. He has worked for Bollywood classics such as Guddi, Shor, Dharkan and Prem Parvat. A renowned guru of 20th century, many of his students have received national and international fame for their field of work, and most famous among his disciples is Hariprasad Chaurasia.

 

Pandit Niranjan Prasad was born in Allahabad, UP. He followed Varanasi Gharana, and received advanced learning in flute from Bholanath Prasanna. Later he performed at major music festivals and conferences throughout India, and in Middle East, Europe and America. His command over the blowing of the instrument made him an artist of international repute. He was the founder of Dr. Ambedkar Sangeet Akademy, Lucknow, and he has also taught at many music schools such as N. R. Sangeet Vidhalaya Allahabad. He also closely worked with many musical societies of north India.

 

He was a Top-Grade flutist belonging to Varanasi Gharana. He was regularly featured in Doordarshan and All India Radio with his music concerts, and was an A-grade artist of both. Since 1974 he worked with National orchestra of A.I.R. New Delhi and retired from A.I.R. Lucknow in 2001. His flute is still preserved by a music museum of Baghdad, and they received it as a gift from him. He passed away in 2013, aged 76. He lived during the period, 11th November 1941 to 31st March 2013.
