P. Susheela Biography
P. Susheela is an Indian playback singer who has received the National Awards for five times and many state awards. She has a very rich voice and has recorded songs in many Indian languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Oriya, Tulu, Badaga, Sanskrit and Bengali. Her career in singing spans over four decades.
Susheela was born on 13th November 1935 in Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh. Her father’s name is Pulapaka Mukunda Rao and he was an advocate. She married Mohan Rao and has a son named Jayakrishna. She got her training in classical music at a very young age and took part in many music competitions during her school days.
In 1950 she was selected by the music director Pendyala Nageswara Rao after some audition tests to sing for the film Petra Thai. She also sang in the Kannada version of the film and then started to work for AVM Studios for a fixed monthly salary. She entered Kannada language in the film Maadidunno Maaraya in 1954.
She sang for the film Missiamma in 1955 and then for Kanavane Kan Kanda Deivam and these two opportunities gave her a breakthrough in the film industry. She grew to be a successful female singer in all south Indian language films. She got her first National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1969 for the song Naalai Intha Velai Paarthu in the film Uyarndha Manidhan.
She also has sung many devotional songs and light music. She participated in the stage shows across the world. She formed the P. Susheela Trust in 2008 that supports the musicians. This trust offers Lifetime Achievement Award and P Susheela Trust Award.
