Lou Majaw was born into a poor and humble family of Shillong. He got drawn towards music at a young age. Yet as a child he could not afford a guitar or a radio because of his poor living conditions. His friend introduced him to the music of Bill Haley and Elvis Presley, and he got drawn towards it instantly. He also started learning guitar. His schooling was done at a boarding school and he never left behind his true passion towards music.

During his younger days, after completing his studies, he moved to Kolkata where he worked at bars and pubs as a singer and performer. Dynamite Boys, Vanguards, Supersound Factory, and Blood and Thunder are some of the major groups with which he has been associated with. He got introduced to Bob Dylan's work in 1966 and got deeply influenced by it. From there on he started performing Bob Dylan songs as a tribute to him. He also arranged many concerts exclusively reserved for Bob Dylan.
