L. Athira Krishna Biography

L. Athira Krishna is a noted violin artist from Kerala, hailed as ‘New Queen of Indian Classical Violin’ and also ‘Violin Princess’.  A young cultural Ambassador from India, she has performed across the globe. An internationally acclaimed Prodigy Violinist of the present generation, she made her name into Guinness Book of World Records for her 32-hour-long Non-Stop Carnatic Violin Solo Concert. She made this record in the year 2003. She also owns many achievements at a younger age. She has also performed live in many cultural music concerts.

 

She was born into a musical family of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. K. C. Krishna Pillai and S. Leela Kurup are her parents. Since a toddler she showed interest in music and would repeat the music phrases she hears. A child prodigy, she received initial training from her grandfather. She also took training in veena and Carnatic music at a young age. She trained violin from her grandfather Gopala Pillai and Veena from her father K. C. Krishna. She started learning music at the age of only 3. She also received training from Sasikumar and Easwara Varma.

 

Greatly influenced by her grandfather, at the age of 7 she completely switched over to Veena and by the age of 8 she started giving solo performances. By the age 9, she performed in many foreign countries. Usha Narayanan, wife of former President of India, K. R. Narayanan hailed her as "The Musical Gem of India".  She has also performed twice at Rashtrapati Bhavan, indeed a great honour. Athira represented India at many prestigious international music festivals.

 

In 2001, she presented a paper presentation on "Violin in South Indian Classical Music" at the prestigious International Children's Assembly held at New Delhi. She created a sensation with her record 13-hour violin recital at the age of 13. Her name was also entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for this performance.
