He was born in New York, USA on May 31, 1947. He reached India in the early 1970’s. He accepted Hindu guru named Neem Karoli Baba as his teacher from whom he learnt Bhakti Yoga, ancient Indian meditation practices. Later he dedicated himself to singing and teaching. Apart from delivering speeches and teachings across the world, Das has also delivered performances as a singing artist. He has also conducted many workshops in the recent times. He visits Rishikesh for practising Yoga and meditation.

Krishna Das has recorded numerous variations of Hanuman Chalisa. He has also performed and recorded the traditional gospel song, "Jesus is on the Mainline." He has once commented that while reading gospels in India, "they sound a lot different at 10,000 feet." His harmonium bears an image of Hanuman, and he generally wears red T-shirts while he performs live. His musical style is distinctly Western, using chord progressions. He has also been associated with other performers like Hans Christian and for the album "Pilgrim Heart” of Sting.
