Kishore Kumar Biography

Kishore Kumar was a famous Indian playback singer and an actor. He had other faces too like lyricist, producer, director and scriptwriter and worked in a number of movies in many Indian languages including, Kannada, Hindi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, Oriya, Marathi, Bengali and Assamese. He has won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer 8 times and this is the highest record in this category.

Kishore Kumar was born on 4th August 1929 in a Bengali Brahmin Ganguly family in Khandwa. His original name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly. His father’s name is Kunjalal Ganguly and mother is Gouri Devi. He is the youngest of four siblings. His elder brothers are Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and sister Sati Devi. He showed keen interest in movies and music since his childhood days. He married four times. His first wife was Ruma Guha Thakurta aka Ruma Ghosh, second wife actress Madhubala. He became a Muslim and took the name Karim Abdul to marry Madhubala who was also a Muslim. After the death of Madhubala, he married Yogeeta Bali and then Leena Chandavarkar. His two sons are Amit Kumar and Sumit Kumar.

When he started his career as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies, he changed his name to Kishore Kumar. His first film was Shikari. Then he got a chance to sing in Marne ki Duayen. After this he got more opportunities. He both acted and sang the song Chhota sa Ghar Hoga  in the film Naukri. The films of his earlier days are Aasha, New Delhi, Half Ticket, Chalti ka Naam Gaadi, Padosan, etc.

He also produced and director some films in the seventies and early eighties like Badhti ka Naam Daadhi, Zindagi, Door Wadiyon Mein Kahin, etc. He sang for Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakraborty, Anil Kapoor and many others. He sang a duet song Guru Guru with Asha Bhosle the day he died. He died of heart attack in Mumbai on 13th October 1987. His body was cremated at Khandwa.
