Kabir Akhtar Biography

Kabir Akhtar is an American television director and Emmy Award-winning editor of Indian origin. He has been nominated thrice in Emmy Awards. Akhtar is also the creator of The Tool Page. Known to be an early innovator on the web, he is currently associated with American television known for making many successful and popular shows. He belongs to the very famous Akhtar filmy family known for their contribution towards Bollywood cinema and Urdu literature. He is the son of famous psychoanalyst, Salman Akhtar known for many publications related the field. He is the grandson of Urdu poet and lyricist, Jan Nisar Akhtar and his second wife Safia Akhtar – a teacher who has authored two books.

His uncle Javed Akhtar is an ace lyricist and screenwriter associated with Hindi cinema since 1970s. He is the cousin of Farhan Akhtar & Zoya Akhtar, related to Bollywood cinema. Kabir Akhtar was born into a family of literals and intellectuals, which many generations exclusively associated with Urdu poetry. His great-grandfather Muztar Khairabadi, his grandfather Jan Nisar Akhtar and his forefathers like Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, Abdul Haque etc were either Urdu writers, religious scholars or both.

Kabir Akhtar was born on January 11, 1975. Associated with entertainment industry, he worked behind the shows, Arrested Development, New Girl, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Behind the Music, and the Academy Awards. He has edited ten pilots which were made into series, and also directed the pilot episodes of the MTV series 8th & Ocean and the new edition of Unsolved Mysteries. In 2016 he won Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series. He got the award for his work on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. He has been nominated at Primetime Emmy Award two times earlier too in two different picture editing categories.
