Jotin Bhattacharya Biography

Jotin Bhattacharya was an Indian classical sarod player from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He is also known as Jyotin Bhattacharya. He was one of the direct disciples of great legend Allauddin Khan, who laid the foundation of the modern Maihar gharana. Jotin Bhattacharya lived during the period, 1 January 1926 - 22 February 2016. Jotin authored three books about his guru Allauddin Khan - Ustad Allauddin Khan and His Music (1979) in English, Allaudin Khan O aamara in Bengali and Allaudin Khan and us in Hindi. He released his first album with HMV in the year 1974, and the album was titled Sarod. It was recorded in LP record format.

 

Jotin Bhattacharya was born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on 1 January 1926. He belonged to a Bengali family settled in the holy city. He completed his higher studies from Benaras Hindu University, which includes his graduation and post-graduation studies. He took formal training in Sarod only after completing his academics, and he learnt from Allauddin Khan for long eight years. He remained one of the popular disciples of this doyen of music, and virtually served him as a secretary handling all his correspondences.

 

He became a tutor to Allauddin Khan's grandchildren, particularly to Ashish Khan the eldest son of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. The other grandchildren in his charge were Ali Akbar Khan's second son, the late Dhyanesh Khan, and daughter Shree, late Shubhendra Shankar, the son of Pandit Ravi Shankar and Annapoorna Devi. His sarod recital provided euphonic glimpses of the Maihar tradition. He later got associated with Baba Alauddin Khan Music Foundation Music School at The Poorva Sanskritik Kendra at Laxmi Nagar as a performer.
