Iman Chakraborty Biography

Iman Chakraborty is an Indian playback singer belonging to Bengali cinema. In 2017 she won National Award for the Best Female Playback singer for her Bengali song “Tumi Jaake Bhalobasho” from the movie, Praktan, and she rose to fame instantly. It was her debut film song, and one among the rare artists to a national award for the debut film song. Among Bengali female artists, Shreya Ghoshal is yet another leading name who achieved the same feat back in 2002 for Bollywood film, Devdas.

 

Iman Chakraborty hails from Liluah, Howrah district, West Bengal. She was born on September 13, 1989 into a family inclined towards music. She learnt the primary lessons of music from her mother Trishna Chakraborty at a very young age, and she has been inclined towards literary works of Rabindranath Tagore since young. She lost her mother at a young age. As a singer she got her first break through Bengali album, ‘Bosh te dio kanche’ released by Saregama. The album included a few songs of Tagore, and belonged to Rabindrasangeet genre. In fact she is predominantly a Rabindrasangeet singer.

 

Bengali composer Anupam Roy happened to hear her voice through her released album, and gave her the first film offer through Praktan. The composer was in search of a fresh and new voice, and he finally zeroed it in this budding youngster. Thus she marked her playback singing debut with the Bengali song “Tumi Jaake Bhalobasho” in 2016, which received National award for best playback singing. The song also won best lyrics award at National awards. The composer gave her 10 days before he recorded the song.
