Hasrat Jaipuri Biography

Hasrat Jaipuri was a popular lyricist of Bollywood in the golden era of music – 50’s to 70’s and lion share of old compositions that music lovers still hear now belongs exclusively for this great poet. He is versatile as a poet in Hindi and Urdu too. The great love song of yesterdays, ‘Yeh mera prem part padkar’ was written by him in his real life for his love interest and later used for the movie Sangham. He has also written the screenplay of the movie Hulchul in 1951.

Hasrat Jaipuri was born in Jaipur and at school level itself, he began to write verse. His paternal grandfather, Fida Husain taught him Urdu and Persian. In 1940, he came to Mumbai and started his life as a bus conductor. As a lyrist his first song was super hit ‘Jiya Bequaraar hai’ of Raj Kapoor’s Barsaat in the year 1949. His second song was a duet - Chhod Gaye Baalam.  After that a magical association of Hasrat Jaipuri began with Raj Kapoor and continued to give music till 1971. He has done many hit songs along with Shailendra for R.K. Banner as well as Raj Kapoor movies belonging to other production companies. Raj Kapoor- Hasrat Jaipuri – Shankar Jaikishen was the magic trio during 50’s and 60’s and death of Jaikishen in 1971 along with flop of Mera naam joker somewhat end this great partnership. However he was called back for ‘Ram teri Ganga maili’ when Raj Kapoor’s son was launched to movies. His major hits with Raj Kapoor include Barsaat, Sangham, Andaz, Teesri kasam and Mera naam joker.

Apart from Raj Kapoor movies, he has also written songs for Rajendra Kumar, Raj kumar, Jitendra, Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor and Joy Mukherjee. His best songs belong to the movies – Love in Tokyo, Andaaz, Prince, Junglee, Bhoot bangle, lal pathar, Geet gaya patharom ne, Ram teri Ganga maili , Brahmachari, Professor and Suraj. Majority of Shammi Kapoor’s hits exclusively belong to this great lyricist. Their association with Shankar Jaikishen is also well noticed, similar to Raj Kapoor hits. He has been nominated in Filmfare for -  E gulbadan of Professor, Dil Ke Jharoke Mein of Brahmachari, Teri pyari pyari of Sasural and Aji Rooth Kar Ab Kahan of Arzoo. He won it last for Baharom phool of Suraj and Zindagi ek safar of Andaz.
