Gulzar Biography

Sampooran Singh Kalra – the versatile poet and lyricist of Hindi has chosen his pen name as Gulzar. He has wonderfully scripted and directed a few Bollywood movies as well and most of them are critically well acclaimed too winning many National awards. He is regarded as the most versatile lyricist of Bollywood in the present times. He holds the unique record of 11 Filmfare awards, more than anyone and has got 28 nominations also. Apart from lyrics of movies, he is better known as a versatile poet of Hindi, Punjabi as well as Urdu languages. His contribution to literature is really worth appreciation. He has been awarded by Padma Bhushan in 2004. Actress of yesterdays’ – Rakhi Gulzar is his beloved wife. Their daughter Meghna Gulzar is a well known filmmaker who has directed movies like Filhaal and Just married. Gulzar has achieved international acclamation through the words, ‘Jai ho!’, he penned for Oscar winning movie – Slumdog Millionaire. Most recently, the phrase has been entered in Oxford dictionary too. Jai ho has played a significant role in the success of the movie. This particular song earned Gramy awards too.

 

As a director, his movies have won many Filmfare awards as well as National awards. Most memorable movies directed by Gulzar are Mausam, Aandhi, Achanak, Kinara, Hut u tu, Lekin, Namkeen, Meera, Kitab, Khushboo, Parichay, Mere Apne, Guddi, Angoor, Libaaz, Matchis and Koshish. In all these movies, song lyrics were written by himself. Most of these movies have won Filmfare and National awards in different categories. He has won best screenplay National award for Koshish. He won best dialogue writing Filmfare awards for movies – Anand, Saathiya and Namak Haraam. ‘Aandhi’ won him second best feature film in National awards. 1996 Movie Machis won many National awards including most popular movie and best actress.  

 

He has been nominated 28 times for best lyrics in Filmfare. The song ‘Yaara seeli seeli’ of Lekin and ‘Mera kuch saman’ of Izzazat  won him both Filmfare as well as National awards for best lyrics. His award winning songs include – Do deewane of Gharonda, Aanewala pal of Golmaal, Hasaar rahom of Thodi si bewafai, Tujhse naaraz of Masoom, Kajra re of Bunti aur Bubli, Dil tyo bacha hai of Ishquiya, Challa of Jab tak hai jaan, Chayya chayya of Dil se and Saathiya of Saathiya.   

 

Gulzar is seen mostly associated with A.R.Rehman in modern times and together they have given some finest contributions to Bollywood – Saathiya, Dil se, Jab tak hai jaan, Raavan, Yuvraaj, Guru and Slumdog millionaire.
