Didar Sandhu Biography

Didar Sandhu was a noted Punjabi folk singer and lyricist from Chakk no. 133 of Sargodha district, British Punjab. He was noted duet singer of his era. His duets with Punjabi singers like Surinder Kaur and Amar Noorie are most popular. Didar Sandhu used to tie turban in a peculiar style while singing on stage, at a time when turban and beard started disappearing from Punjab. His noted songs are Meri mahi-mahi kehndi di zuban sukk gayi, Phatak Kotkapure da, Na kar mainu pyar, Jorhi jadon chubare charhdi, Na maar zaalma ve, peke tattri de door, Mera joban peeta and Jal te phull tarda (boliyan).

 

Sandhu was born July 3, 1942, to S. Sardar Samund Singh and Daan Kaur in British Punjab. He was the youngest of five brothers. After partition, his family moved to the Baddowal village of Jagraon tehsil in East Punjab and later settled in Bharowal Khurd village of Ludhiana district. In 1966, Didar married to Amarjeet Kaur and the couple had two kids. Their son Jagmohan Sandhu is also a singer. He has served as a Sarpanch of his village Bharowal Khurd for 15 years.

 

Sandhu was attracted to poetry from a younger age and started writing since school days. Didar's wriiten first song jatt barha bedardi was sung by Narinder Biba. In 1962, he got a government job and during this time, he met Punjabi singer Mohd. Sadiq and became good friends. Most of his early songs were recorded in the voices of Mohd. Sadiq and Narinder Biba. “Meri aisi jhanjar chhanke, chhankata painda” was the first noted song recorded in Sadiq’s voice. ‘Pind dean mundean nu sanu vekh’ with female singer Sneh Lata was his first song recorded as a singer. Very soon his duets became popular.
