Deepa Miriam Biography

Deepa Miriam is a south Indian playback singer who shot to fame after singing the popular track of Tamil movie Subramaniapuram - Kangal Iraandal. The song gave Filmfare award for best playback singer for the year 2008. She is mostly concentrated to Tamil movies and she made her film debut through Tamil movie - Naan Avanillai. She has recorded more than 40 private albums belonging to 7 languages including Arabic. She originally belongs to Kerala, born and brought up in UAE.

 

She was born to a Malayalee Christian family in UAE. Her family originally belongs to Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram city. She completed her school education in UAE. She received formal training in Carnatic music at a young age. She started singing at the age of 7 and has won many singing competitions in different categories. Her first album was released at the age of 12. It was a Christian devotional album titled Viswasanthi. She completed B. Tech in electronics from Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara. She passed the junior certificate course in Hindustani music from Kerala University. She moved to US for higher studies and settle abroad. But her passion to music prompted her to end those desires and concentrate on to a music career. She also passed three grades with Honours for piano from Trinity College, London.

 

She made her playback singing debut through Tamil movie, Naan avanillai. The song was ‘Then Kudicha Nilavu’. But it was the phenomenal success of Kangal Iraandaal which made her a popular singer among Tamilians. James Vasanthan, the music composer of Subramaniapuram is a friend of Deepa’s husband, N. I.  John. He heard a few songs of Deepa and invited her to sing a demo of ‘Kangal Iraandal’. After a long wait, the song got a positive nod from M. Sasikumar.
