D. V. Sadananda Gowda Biography

Devaragunda Venkappa Sadananda Gowda, shortly called D. V. Sadananda Gowda is a prominent politician and former chief minister of Karnataka. He is a parliamentarian too and has been chosen to Narendra Modi’s cabinet where he has been given the portfolio of railways. He was the 20th Chief Minister of Karnataka as the predecessor of B. S. Yeddyurappa. He is the President of Karnataka unit of Bharatiya Janata Party since 2008 when BJP won an assembly election for the first time in South India. However he resigned his position in 2012 as instructed by BJP's Central Committee.

He was born in Mandekolu Village in Sulya taluk in 1953. He graduated from Puttur and completed LLB. He was active in student’s union during his college days. He was elected as the General Secretary of the Students Union of the Law College and later became District General Secretary of the ABVP. After completion of LLB in 1976 he started his professional career as a lawyer. For a brief period he also served as a public prosecutor in Uttara Kannada. However to be completely active in politics, he resigned his job.

He began his political career as a member of the Jan Sangh and later climbed steps one by one till he reached President of Karnataka unit of Bharatiya Janata Party in 2008. He contested in state assembly elections in 1994 and 1999 from the Puttur Assembly seat and got elected. In 1999 he became the Deputy Leader of the Opposition. In 2004 he defeated the prominent congress leader Veerappa Moily from Bangalore constituency and reached parliament. Thus he began his successful career as a parliamentarian. He also got elected to 15th Lok Sabha from Udupi Chikmagalur Constituency.
