Veerappa Moily Biography

Veerappa Moily is an Indian politician from Karnataka. He is serving as the Minister of Corporate Affairs in the Indian Government. He is elected as the MP of the Chickballapur district in 2009 election. He is one of the senior members of the Congress Party and is very close to the Congress Leader Sonia Gandhi. He is the former Chief Minister of Karnataka. He was in this position from 19th November 1992 to 11th December 1994. He was elected from the Karkala constituency to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Veerappa Moily was born on 12th January 1940 in Marpadi Village, Moodbidri, Dakshina Kannada District, in Karnataka. He finished his Bachelor of Arts degree from Government College which is now known as University College at Hampankatta in Mangalore. He did his B. L in University Law College Bengaluru. He married his cousin Malathi, his uncle’s daughter and has four children, 3 daughters and one son and five grandchildren.

He practiced law in the courts of Karkala, Mangalore before he entered politics. He served as the Minister for Small Scale Industries from 1974 to 1977 and Minister of Finance and Planning from 1980 to 1982 in the Government of Karnataka. He also served as the Chairman of Tax Reforms Commission, Revenue Reforms Commission and Oversight Committee for implementation of 27 percent reservation for OBCs in central educational institutions. He led the implementation of economic reforms in Karnataka in 1992.

He wrote a book, The Edge of Time which analyzes the complex cultural practices of coastal Karnataka. He was a columnist in The Hindu and Deccan Herald English language newspapers and Samyukta Karnataka, a Kannada newspaper. He authored Musings on India Part 1 and Part 2 about contemporary issues. He received Ameen Sadbhavana Award in 2000, Devaraj Urs Prashasthi in 2001, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Award in 2002, Aryabhatta Award in 2001 and Moortidevi Award in 2010.
