Chhote Rahimat Khan Biography

Chhote Rahimat Khan is a sitar player, musician and composer. He belongs to a family of musical tradition with six generations associated with the field of music. He performs in Dharwad Gharana of Hindustani music. Famous sitar players - Shafique Khan and Rafique Khan are his twin brothers, and both were born on June 30, 1968. Sitar Ratna Rahimat Khan was his paternal grandfather, the legendary musician best remembered for adding the base octave to the sitar and also for modifying 3-string sitar to 7-string musical instruments, and still now musicians prefer to use 7-string sitars.

 

Chhote Rahimat Khan was born in the year 1959 in Dharwad, Karnataka. Born into a family of sitarists with rich heritage of music for many centuries, he started playing sitar at a young age. His father Ustad Abdul Karim Khan was a renowned artist. He has three brothers including Ustad Bale Khan. He received training from his father. His uncle Ustad Dastagir Khan was a renowned artist of Gayaki Ang. At the age of 19, he secured second prize at AIR Music competition held at his hometown.

 

Khan is fully engaged with his live concerts and has performed in almost all music concerts of the country. He has also performed in other countries. He is a ‘top-grade' artiste in All India Radio, and he regularly performs for AIR Dharwad and AIR Panaji. Khan is a musical composer of films made in Goa. He scored music to Vadhachakra (1992), the first Marathi film of Goa and also Konkani film, Tulsi (1994) apart from a few plays like Abhidnyan Shakuntal of Kalidasa. He currently serves as Head of the Sitar Faculty at Kala Academy in Goa.
