Bulo C. Rani Biography

Bulo C. Rani was a popular music director and playback singer associated with Hindi and Gujarati languages. Associated with film scene since 1943, he stayed in the industry for almost three decades till 1972 and scored music for 71 films. He was active in Bollywood till 1960s. His first film as a composer was Caravan (1944) and later he composed some memorable tracks for movies such as Moorti, Pehli Nazar, Rajputani (1946), Anjuman (1948), Jogan (1950), Wafa (1951) and Bilwamangal (1954). When the film industry got dominated with next generation of music composers like Shankar Jaikishen, Salil Chowdhury, O P Nayyar etc, he slowly faded away from film scene. "Humein Toh Loot Liya" from the movie Al Hilaal (1958) and "Mangne Se Jo Maut Mil Jati" from Sunehre Qadam (1966) are among his noted songs later.

 

His full name is Bulo Chandiram Ramchandani, born on May 6, 1920 in Hyderabad, Sindh province of British India. His father was also a music director. Following his father’s steps, after completing graduation he joined Ranjit Movietone in 1939. Ranjit Movietone is known for making several landmark movies in Hindi and Gujarati languages. He faced a lot of struggles during his initial days. He assisted famous music director Khemchand Prakash in the early 1940s, which include - Tansen, Chandni, Sukh Dukh and Shahenshah Babar.

 

In 1942 he got his first opportunity to sing under his mentor. Thus "Ruth Na Pyaar Mein" of Mehmaan (1942) marked his singing debut. He also got opportunity to compose one song, "Dukhiya Jiyara" in the film Tansen, sung by Khursheed. But he didn’t get its credit as a music composer. He later assisted Gyan Dutt in two films- Paigham and Shankar Parvati and composed the song "O Jogan O Bairaagi" for Shankar Parvati which became a hit. But its credits went to Gyan Dutt. After a lot of struggles, he made his debut as a music director through the film - Caravan (1944). He committed suicide on 23 May 1993 at the age of 73 years in Mumbai and the news was not reported by newspapers then.
