Brij Narayan Biography

Brij Narayan is an accomplished sarod player and Hindustani musician from Udaipur, Rajasthan. He is the son and disciple of legendary musician Ram Narayan, who popularised the bowed instrument sarangi as a solo concert instrument in Hindustani classical music and earned international acclaim. Brij Narayan won the All India Radio instrumentalist competition in 1967. He accompanied his father for many concerts in India and abroad. He also owns numerous students of whom Arnab Chakrabarty is one of the leading names. Narayan was awarded a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani instrumental music – sarod in 2015.

Brij Narayan was born on 25 April 1952 in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He belongs to a family with strong Hindustani music background. He is the eldest son of sarangi player Ram Narayan. Chatur Lal, the renowned Indian tabla player was his uncle. Brij Narayan was initiated to the world of music and sarod at a younger age by his father. He began playing the sarod at the age of seven. Though he knows to play Sarangi, he chose Sarod over sarangi for his musical journey because he liked its "combination of melody and percussion". He also learnt tabla from his uncle a little bit.

He studied sarod under renowned artist Ali Akbar Khan in Delhi. Following his father’s death he returned to his hometown in 1965. He completed his graduation from University of Mumbai in 1972. However he turned a full-time musician after that, and also performed at the Munich Olympics the same year. He has toured across India and other parts of the world with his musical concerts. He has also played sarod in a few Hindi films such as Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, and composed a few filmy tunes too.
