Biju Sopanam Biography

Biju Sopanam is a popular actor associated with Malayalam mini screen. He is also a theatre artist. He is best known for playing comic roles. He started off playing lead roles in Sanskrit plays of Kalidas and Bhasan, before he moved to small screen. The comedy sitcom Uppum Mulakum made him a household name. He played the role of Balagopalan Thampi (Balu), who owns a family with 4 children, and talks in Thiruvananthapuram dialect. In 2017, he forayed into big screen playing a prominent role of Advocate Subbu in Manju Warrier starrer C/O Saira Banu. His role as an innocent fellow who helps Manju was lauded by critics.

Biju hails from Thiruvananthapuram and currently resides at Nettayam of main city. He joined Kavalam Narayana Panicker’s theatre troupe in the year 1995. Since young, acting was his first choice. He was only 20 years old when he joined theatre, and has been associated with the troupe for 2 decades. He was recommended to Kavalam by veteran actor, Nedumudi Venu. For the first 6 months, he observed everything before he was introduced to the group. It takes minimum two months to learn a role, and he was lucky enough to play lead roles in Kavalam plays. He had to learn Sanskrit under masters to master the art of plays. Many celebrities were in touch with Kavalam, and they used to visit him, and that’s how Biju got into television arena.

Films have been his first interest, and he did a few bit roles before C/O Saira Banu happened to him. In 2006 he appeared in Mammootty starrer Raja Manikyam, where he enacted a person who kills the minister amid a procession. He was also seen in Mammootty’s Bhargava Charitham Moonam Khandam. His friendship with the crew members earned him similar roles, but none of them was prominent, and all those roles went unnoticed. He was fully active with theater at that time. Things changed like a miracle after he got the big break through comedy sitcom Uppum Mulakum. Currently the actor is receiving many roles from films, but he is waiting for the right ones.
