Babulal Marandi Biography

Babulal Marandi is a well-known Indian politician and the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He is a member of 15th Lok Sabha and he was elected from Kodarma constituency. In Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet, he has served as Minister of State, Forests & Environment. He is the founder president of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik). His son Anup Marandi was killed in a Naxal attack in Jharkhand in 2007.


He was born on 11 January 1958 in Giridih of present day Jharkhand. After schooling from his village school he completed intermediate and graduation from Giridih College. It was during his college days that he came close to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. After graduation he started his career as a school teacher. But later he gave up his job to become actively involved with politics. He was actively associated with Sangh Parivar and was the organising secretary of the Jharkhand region of Vishwa Hindu Parishad. In the early 1980’s he moved to Dumka and worked under Santhal Parganas division.


In 1991, he contested for the first time for Lok Sabha from Dumka. He was a BJP candidate and lost the elections. He lost by small margin of 5,000 to Shibu Soren. Very soon he was appointed as the BJP president of Jharkhand unit. Under his leadership BJP won 12 out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Jharkhand in the 1998 Assembly election. It was one of the turning points of his political career and he was invited to join the Union Council of Ministers. After the formation of the state Jharkand, NDA came to power under Babulal Marandi’s leadership and continued till 2003 when he was forced to leave the chair.
