Atal Bihari Vajpayee Biography

Atal Bihari Vajpayee is an Indian politician who served as the 11th Prime Minister of India. He served in this post for three times including a brief term of 13 days. He headed a coalition government from 19th March 1998 to 19th May 2004. His career stretches over four decades and he has been elected to the Lok Sabha nine times and to the Rajya Sabha two times. He served as the Member of Parliament from Lucknow until the year 2009 and now retired from active positive due to his health conditions.

 

He was born on 25th December 1924 in Shinde Ki Chhavani Gwalior of Central Province in Madhya Pradesh. His parents are Krishna Bihari Vajpayee and Krishna Devi. His father was a poet and school master. Atal Bihari Vajpayee got his graduation in B. A. from Victoria College at Gwalior and did his post graduation in Political Science from DAV College, Kanpur. He joined DAV College to study LLB but left in the middle and joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He is a good orator and a dedicated journalist. He has written a number of poetry. He remained a bachelor and was the only bachelor Prime Minister of India.

 

His political career started in 1942 and he was arrested for taking part in the Quit India movement. He became close to the Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in Hindi in 1977. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1957. In 1980, he founded Bharatiya Janata Party together with his friends Lal Krishna Advani and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. The party could get only two parliamentary seats in the 1984 elections.

 

The BJP supported Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Movement led by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and RSS to build Lord Rama temple at the place of Babri Mosque in Ayodhya. In the 1995 elections the party could win in Gujarat and Maharashtra and do well in 1994 Karnataka assembly elections. In 1995 L. K. Advani announced that if BJP won in the elections of May 1996, Atal Bihari Vajpayee would be the Prime Minister of India.

 

In 1996 elections, he was sworn in as the Prime Minister and as he could not prove his majority, he had to resign his post. Again he became the Prime Minister of India after fresh elections. The important events that took place during his tenure were nuclear bomb testing in Pokhran, Rajasthan, The Lore Summit, Kargil War and Indian Airlines hijack. He received Padma Vibhushan award, Lokmanya Tilak award and Best Parliamentarian award and many other awards and honors.
