B. Arundhathi Biography

B. Arundhathi is a playback singer associated with south Indian cinema, predominantly Malayalam films. She is also a trained Carnatic singer and currently works as a music teacher. She has also excelled in light music equally. She has sung only a few songs for Malayalam in the 1980s and 1990s, but are still remembered as evergreen songs by music lovers. The song with a classical touch - Ethra Pookkaalamini of Raakkuyilin Raaga Sadassil was her major break to Malayalam playback singing.

Arundathi’s entry to music was through school and college level singing competitions. She has participated in state festival for three times continuously while at school. It was in the year 1975 when she got state first in singing competition. She was studying in class 10. Playback singer Sujatha was the major contender for the title. Sujatha was already a popular figure then, through state shows. Yet when result was declared, Arundathi grabbed the first prize. This singer admits that in those days, she had stage fear and she never expected to win the first prize.

She debut playback singing through the movie – Novemberile Nashtam. It was a duet with Chitra – Arkilo Akalayo. Actually she first got the break through the song – Rajani Parayu for the movie, Jnan Ekanaanu in 1982. Recording was done and during the time of voice mixing, she didn’t get permission from her father to do playback singing. Thus the song was later sung by Chitra, which proved to be her career break. Arundathi’s first song went unnoticed. Then she got the song - Kiliye Kiliye of Dheem Tharikida Thom, which was popular. But the song Ethra Pookkaalamini of Raakkuyilin Raaga Sadassil cemented her position in playback singing. These three songs were offered by M. G. Radha Krishnan.

She has sung for several stage shows of Ravindran. She has rendered her voice for some compositions of Ravindran, M. G. Radha Krishnan, A. R. Rahman etc. She was the lead female voice of the movies – Swathi thirunal and Utharam. Manjin Vilolamaam, Maarivil Poonkuyile of Hitler, Meda Ponnaniyum of Devasuram, Kiliye Kiliye of Dheem Tharikida Thom,  Oh Priye of Aniathipravu, Himashaila of Mazha, Valli Thirumanam and Ethra Pookkaalamini of Raakkuyilin Raaga Sadassil, Swapnamalini of Devadas, Entharo Mahanu of Devaraagam, Paalkadalil of Gowrisankaram are a few among her memorable songs.
