Arun Govil Biography

Arun Govil is a popular television actor who has worked for a few movies also. He is best known for playing Rama in Ramanand Sagar's hit television series Ramayan (1986). He has acted in Bhojpuri, Oriya and Telugu movies also. His sister-in-law Tabassum is a famous television anchor and artist who works for television channels like ZEE TV and Doordarshan.

Arun Govil was born in Ramnagar near Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He spent his teenager life at Shahjahanpur. He completed his college studies at Meerut University. His father wanted him to become stable in life with a government job. But Arun want to do something in life for which he will be always remembered. Thus he left to Mumbai. He was only 17 then and he decided to start a business there. But later he joined Television and movies.

His first break was 1977 film Paheli. He was introduced to the director Tarachand Barjatya by his sister in law Tabassum. Later he appeared in movies like Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979), Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin (1979), Ayaash (1982) and Itni Si Baat (1981). But it was not a huge success to him. He was casted as Sri Rama in Ramayana by Ramanand Sagar. It became a huge success and people loved to watch Rama on screen and began to see him as the avatar of Lord Rama. He was widely popular among the public also. Actress Deepika was paired opposite Arun as Sita and people loved to see them as Rama – Sita Jodi on television. Ramayana was the first mythological serial, based on Hindu Purana on TV.

Seeing the success of Ramayana, Ramanand Sagar casted him as Vikramaditya in another Doordarshan serial – Vikram aur Vetaal. It was also widely appreciated and has been re-telecasted many times later too. He won the Uptron Award for "Best Actor in a Leading Role" in 1988 for his role as Vikramaditya.  Despite being widely appreciated as a religious person, he has admitted that he is "not particularly religious" except that he used to attend Rama Leela to please his mother. Other popular serials of Arun Govil are Aparajitha, Ehsaas - Kahani Ek Ghar Ki, Masaal and Jai Veer Hanuman.
