Anupama Chopra Biography

Anupama Chopra is an Indian author, journalist and film critic. At present she works as consulting editor for India's NDTV. She is married to popular Bollywood director, Vidhu Vinod Chopra known for the films like Parinda, 1942 A Love story, Ekalavya and Mission Kashmir. Her sister Tanuja Chandra is also a famous director of Bollywood known for woman oriented subjects like Dushman, Sur and Sangarsh. Her brother Vikram Chandra is a noted writer known for bestselling books like Red earth and pouring rain, Love and longing in Bombay and Sacred Games. These three siblings are the children of famous lady screenwriter of Bollywood, Kamna Chandra who wrote the scripts of blockbuster hits like Prem Rog, 1942 A love story and Chandini. Anupama won the 2000 National Film Award for Best Book on Cinema for her first book Sholay: The Making of a Classic.

 

Anupama Chopra was born as Anupama Chandra in Kolkata on February 23, 1967 as the daughter of Navin Chandra, a business executive and Kamna Chandra, a screenwriter and playwright. She was grown up in Mumbai along with her siblings. She has also stayed at Hong Kong for a short period. In 1987, she graduated from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai with BA in English Literature. Her dream was to become a film journalist and took MA in journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. She won the Harrington Award for magazine journalism during this time.

 

She started working on film journalism at a time when this sector was not fully flourished. Journalists were not willing to admit then that they were working for movies. Her first book was published in 2000 - Sholay: The Making of a Classic. She has also authored books related to movies - Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The "Brave-Hearted Will Take the Bride"), King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the seductive world of Indian cinema and First Day First Show: Writings from the Bollywood Trenches.
