Anand Thakore Biography
Anand Thakore is an English poet, writer and Hindustani classical vocalist belonging to Agra Gharana. He is the founder of Harbour Line, a publishing collective, and Kshitij, an interactive forum for musicians. He has published three poetry collections till now. They are Elephant Bathing (2012), Mughal Sequence (2012) and Waking in December (2001). Thakore was judge and a co-editor for the first Montreal International Poetry Prize (2011). Though he is famous for his poems, he has also done non-fiction work like essays, and has also edited a few.
Anand Thakore was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 17 February 1971. He was born into a family of musicians and literals. His paternal grandmother, Kapila Thakore was an award-winning children's writer and translator of Gujarati language. His father is a sitarist. Since early childhood Anand got drawn towards Hindu Mythology and also Indian classical music and dance. His younger days were spent in UK and India, and he finally settled here in Mumbai, where he continued with his schooling and college studies.
While in the UK, he received instruction in Western choral singing and violin. Once he returned to India, he did advanced training in Hindustani music. Apart from music, he is also interested in literature. In other words, he inherited both music and literature from his family. He gave his first public performance at the Vitaan Festival of Music and Dance in 1989, and has been performing since then. He simultaneously developed a passion for English literature, and he is interested in languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit and Braj Bhasha. He has also composed tunes and words penned by him. He studied English and Sanskrit for his academics.
