Alok Ulfat Biography

Alok Ulfat is a famous theatre personality and philanthropist. He is the founder of Avikal Initiative for Life & Active learning which includes theater company, workshops and Rang Himalaya. He is married to noted television actress and TV host, Shruti Ulfat, and the couple has one son. Both his parents Prof. Lekh Raj Ulfat and Sadhana Ulfat too were associated with many philanthropic activists for women empowerment and welfare of children. Alok currently serves as a trustee of Nanhi Dunya, started by his father for children’s education and welfare. Alok has served as the faculty of two leading drama schools – National School of Drama and Film and Television Institute of India.

He was born in Dehradun, Uttarakhand into a family of philanthropists. Both his parents were social workers and activists. He schooled at Nanhi Duniya, started by his father. After completing his Master’s in English from DBS & DAV College, he completed a teacher training and theatre course from Emerson College, UK. Influenced by the philanthropic activities of his parents, he too got attracted to social concerns, environment issues and also developed a passion in storytelling.

He served as a faculty at Film and Television Institute of India for long years and made many improvisation programs in students’ selection and admission for FTII courses. In a long career associated with theatre, he has played different kinds of roles. As an actor, director, professor he has given some significant contributions to Indian theatre. He also conducted workshops for students. National award winning actor Rajkumar Rao and director of national award winning film Ship of Theseus, Anand Gandhi are among his prominent students.  He started Avikal Theatre Company about two decades ago in the 1990s, which promotes theatre activities. His wife Shruti Ulfat is also associated with theater and in 2013 they together staged nukkad plays.
