Incarnation - An Old Bollywood Formula That Still Works

When Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om ran successfully in theatres for weeks breaking several previous records, it became the most successful Indian movie based on the theme of incarnation or rebirth. When Farah collected the huge amounts at box office, she forgot to give credits or mention to old, Madhumati, the film on which Om Shanti Om’s script has been based on. Yes, Madhumathi is the basic of all classic Indian movies based on incarnation. How many movies have we seen for the past 55 years since Madhumati has released! Mehbooba, Karz, Karzzz, Hamesha, Milan, Love story 2050, Dangerous Ishq, Mahal, Kudrat, Hum to mohabbat karega, Prem, Ab ke baras or Karan Arjun, movies have either became blockbusters or heavily failed at box office; one of the extremes. Magadheera, one of the expensive south Indian movies also need special mention.

Yes, incarnation has been a basic formula of Bollywood to collect huge amount from box office. Mahal released in 1949, starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala was one of the earliest hits based on this story. It was carried forward by Dilip Kumar – Vaijayanthimala starrer Madhumati in 1958. Biggest cash makers in Indian market have been Karz, Kudrat, Karan Arjun and Om Shanti Om. Biggest flops of course, the remake of Subhash Ghai’s blockbuster Karz, titled Karzzzz. Amrita Rao and Arya babbar debut Bollywood with Ab ke baras, a box office duck. Karishma returned to silver screen after a long break with the movie, Dangerous Ishq. However, the much hyped movie couldn’t meet audience’ expectations. It was a story of incarnation passing through 4 births and many centuries. Earlier too, reincarnation stories have been bit bitter to this actress.

ShahRukh Khan and Salman Khan, two big stars of Bollywood came together for the first time in 1995, telling the rebirth story of Karan and Arjun. It was emotionally plotted by Rakesh Roshan and the idea worked at box-office too. However same year, debut movie of Sanjay Kapoor, aside Tabu – Prem, was a huge flop. It was a new theme, but the lagging project paved way to its disaster too. Same was the destiny of Kajol’s next incarnation movie, after Karan Arjun – Hamesha. The same plot will definitely work in box office. Farah Khan has showed how it can happen. Let other film makers too, follow her steps and bring something fresh to the idea of old re-birth stories.
