Madhu Sudan Biography

Madhu Sudan is an Indian scientist and professor in the field of computers. He is a member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

 

He was born on 12th September 1966 in Chennai in India. He studied at IIT Delhi and obtained his B. Tech degree in computer science in 1987. He joined the University of California in Berkeley in 1992 and got his doctorate degree in computer science. His thesis was titled Efficient Checking of Polynomials and Proofs and the Hardness of Approximations.

 

Initially he started his career with the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights in New York in 1992. He served there until 1997 and in 1997 he joined MIT. He joined Microsoft Research New England in June 2009.

 

He was researching in communication & computing, coding theory, property testing and algebra in computation. He served as the Editor in Chief in the Foundations and Trends in Theoretical Computer Science, SIAM Journal on Computing, Editor of Theory of Computing, Scientific Committee on Electronic Colloquium on Computational Complexity, etc.

 

He is doing his research on semantic communication and property testing. He has contributed greatly to the probabilistically checkable proofs, non-approximability of optimization problems and error correcting codes.

 

He received Sakrison Memorial Award in 1993, ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award, Sloan Foundation Fellowship, NSF Career Award, Information Theory Paper Award, Godel Prize, Felicitation, Indian Association Computing Research, Distinguished Alumnus Award, University of California at Berkeley, CS Division, Radcliffe Fellowship, and Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indian Institute of Technology at New Delhi, Guggenheim Fellowship and ACM Fellow.
