Jaidev Kumar Biography

Jaidev Kumar is a famous music director of Punjab who is often addressed as ‘A. R. Rahman of Punjab’. He is the son of famous Punjabi music director K. Panna Lal and at present one of the most successful music composers from Punjab. Apart from film music, he has also composed for numerous albums of leading Punjabi bhangra and pop singers like Jasbir Jassi, Babbu Mann, Hans Raj Hans, Harbhajan Mann, Sardool Sikander and Rabbi Shergill. Mannat, Tera Mera Ki Rishta, Jee Aayan Nu, Pata Nahi Rabb Kehdeyan Rangan Ch Raazi, Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris, Asa Nu Maan Watna Da, Yaaran Naal Baharan, Khushiyan, Dharti and Saadi Love Story are among his noted films.

 

Jaidev Kumar is of Delhi origin and he moved to Mumbai in 2000 to start his music career. He lost his father at a younger age. His father, K. Panna Lal was a famous music director. When his sister got married to famous ghazal singer Chandan Dass, Jaidev learnt guitar from him. In 1986 he started formal training of music and Chote Lal was his first guru. Before joining as an assistant with great music director Charanjeet Ahuja, he played guitar at hotels.

 

As a music director, ‘Dil lai gi kudi Gujarat di…’ for Jasbir Jassi was his big break. The song was a roaring chartbuster in the year 2000 which proved to be a major break of Jassi as well. It was followed by a string of hits with all leading Punjabi singers. ‘Gallan Goriyan (Harbhjan Mann), Saaun Di Jhadi (Babbu Mann) and Chorni (Hans Raj Hans) are his celebrated albums as a music director.
