Harris Jayaraj Biography

Harris Jayaraj is a music composer who has written a number of scores and soundtracks for Tamil, Hindi and Telugu films. He was born on 8th January 1975 at Tirunelveli. His father is S. M. Jayakumar, guitarist, musician and film composer who was an assistant to Malayalam music director Shyam and his mother is Rachael. He studied at Krishnaswamy Matriculation School at Chennai. He started to learn Carnatic music when he was just six. He finished his graduation at Trinity College of Music, London. He married Joyce and has a son, Samuel Nocholas and daughter Karen Nikita.

 

Harris Jayaraj started his career in the year 1987 as a keyboardist. He has worked with many music composers like A. R. Rahman, Mani Sharma, Karthik Raja, Sirpi, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Vidhyasagar. He is a great admirer of M. S.Viswanathan. His debut film is Minnalae in Tamil which was directed by Gautham. He worked in 12B and then he gave beautiful pieces of music in many of the films like Saamy, Kovil, Kaaka Kaaka, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Pachaikili Muthucharam, Vaaranam Aayiram, Ullam Ketkume, Unnale Unnale, Dhaam Dhoom, aadhavan, Gajini, Anniyan, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, etc.

 

His album Lesa Lesa was also very successful. His debut in Telugu film industry with Vasu gained much appreciation there. He is the only one musician who has worked with director Shankar next only to A. R. Rahman. His song Sutrum Vizhi Chudare won him the best musician Tamil Nadu State film award.

 

From the year 2001 to 2009, he has won Filmfare Awards five times. He also has won International Tamil Film Awards twice, Vijay Awards five times, Tamil Nadu State Film Awards twice and many more. The title Kalaimamani was bestowed on him by Government of Tamil Nadu.
