Derek O Brien Biography 
Derek O'Brien is the legendary quizmaster from Kolkata. He is also a Rajya Sabha member. Derek started his career as a journalist, shifted to advertising and finally decided to pursue his real passion as a quiz master. The Bournvita Quiz Contest on Indian television made him a household name, and he co-hosted this program aside the model, Saumya Tandon. This one is one of the longest running quiz shows of Indian television. In 2004, he joined the All India Trinamool Congress and now serves as MP of the same party, representing Bengal.
He has also authored many books – most notably, “The Best of Bournvita Quiz Contest”, “Derek’s Challenge”, “Speak Up, Speak Out: My Favourite Elocution Pieces and How to Deliver Them”. Through his intelligence and scholastic achievement, he achieved success in his career as a quiz master. He edited the book “My Way” which included the success stories of 12 Indian achievers.
He was born in Kolkata in an Anglo-Indian family in the year 1961. He was born to Neil O'Brien, a pioneer of quizzing in India during early 20th century. His schooling was completed at Kolkata and Delhi and he later studied at Scottish Church College, Kolkata. He took journalism as his career and worked with ‘Sports world’ magazine. But very soon, he found interest in advertising and worked for next 8 years at Ogilvy. Then he took decision to become a quiz master like his father. He started conducting inter-school quiz competitions in India and very soon became successful. Later he conducted similar quiz shows globally and was quite successful. He founded ‘Derek O'Brien & Associates’ which hosts "The Brand Equity Quiz", India’s longest running corporate quiz show.
