Sonamarg Travel Guide

The town of Sonamarg is located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is at a close distance from Srinagar and is at a height of 3000 feet above sea level and has to its credit some of the best views of the countryside views in the region. When you take a drive through the route from Srinagar to Sonamarg you will get to see some of the beautiful and picturesque scenic beauty in the state.

One of the major attractions of the place is the glacier of Thajiwas. This is visited by tourists in the summer months and for that you can take the help of hired pony rides. The Sindh River flows through the region and has is also aplenty with its natural reserves of trout. This is also a place of snow capped mountains and glaciers that serves as the base for camping and trekking excursions to the Himalayas.

There is a wide variety of fir, birch and pine trees that are found here in thick growth.  There is also a few lakes in the area. Chief among them is the Gadsar Lake and the Satsar Lake. These are both aplenty in their reserves of fish like snow trout and other varieties of fish. You will also be pleasantly surprised to see the wide variety of flowers that are seen around the lakes. There are several other Himalayan lakes in the region. These are Vishansar, Krishansar and Gangabal.

There are different locations that are available in the region where excursions for trekking and hiking trips are organized. There is a place called Baltal that is located at the Zoji La Pass. This is also a place that reaches up to Ladakh. There are other groups of trekkers that also pass through the location of Baltal to reach Leh.

Sonamarg is a place that does not have an airport or even a railway station of its own. The nearest airport is at Srinagar. It is at a distance of 80 kilometers. There is also a wide network of bus services that ply from the region to other places. There are different kinds of bus services as well as taxi services that can cover the distance to Sonamarg. The distance with Srinagar takes a time approximately 2 hours.

There is a beautiful picnic spot available in a place called Yushmarg. This is a place of amazing natural beauty and landscapes of flowers and trees. At Sonamarg you will be able to stay in equally beautiful hutments that are located here. There is a presence of government accommodations and also private arrangements of the same in lodges and hotels.
