The Shimla State Museum houses the historical sculptors and paintings of Himachal Pradesh and this museum was established in 1974 to display the cultural wealth of the state. It is located in the Mall area and has a library of rare books and manuscripts. To reach Shimla State Museum you have to take a leisurely walk from the Mall along the Gortan Castle and the Cecil.

One can see the stone works belonging to 8^th century A.D. here and there is also a good display of traditional dolls. There are many galleries in the Shimla State Museum such as pre-historic gallery, wood carving gallery, archaeological gallery, wall painting gallery, numismatic gallery, Pahari miniature painting gallery, photographs gallery, Rajasthan miniature painting gallery and bronze gallery.
