Local Transportation in Shimla

The local transportation in Shimla is offered by buses, taxis and auto rickshaws. The private vehicles are also available. However in some places, the only mode of travel is walking on the steep hills or on the steps built on them.

Both private operators and Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation runs buses within the city. If you want to take the daily tourist buses to the various nearby attractions in Shimla then you have to visit the Tourist Information Center located in the Mall.

Four types of buses are operated namely ordinary buses, high tech buses, deluxe buses and luxury coach air conditioned buses. If you book tickets in bulk in the buses or purchase the return tickets also, you are entitled to a discount given by the Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation.

Transportation in Shimla by Cabs and Auto-rickshaws

Private cabs, taxis and auto rickshaws are available for transport. They charge a reasonable amount and could be hired from anywhere in the city. Hiring private taxis are the convenient way of getting to sightseeing places in Shimla. Parking is a problem in Shimla and so auto rickshaws are not found in large numbers. On the hill slopes the only mode of travel is by walk. If you want to enjoy all the places of the city, you must be ready to walk long distances. The local people of Shimla usually travel on foot. In some areas like the mall, the ridge and in the market places, the private vehicles are prohibited. This is because of the narrow roads and steep slopes. You have to walk for a distance and then climb some steps and then walk again and so vehicles cannot reach such places.

Transportation in Shimla by Lift

Lift or elevator is one of the modes of transportation used here. Himachal Pradesh Tourism operates lift in the Cart Road. Boarding the lift will take you to the Mall. This lift is on the road side and you have to change two lifts to reach the top.

Transportation in Shimla by Horse or Mule

Kufri is one of the photographic places near Shimla. Reaching the top of Kufri will give you the glimpses of the snow clad mountain ranges and the borders of China and Tibet viewable through telescope. There is a small lake here and the way to the top is filled with marshy and swampy lands and it is very difficult to walk. The only mode of transport is horses or mules. Many horse owners take you to the top of Kufri and back on payment. The peak is called Mahasu. The horse man wears a special type of shoe to walk along in that damp soil. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the spot and you can spend 2 hours there and return back in the same horse.
