When it comes to listing the popular tourist destination of the North Eastern Region, Shillong invariably occupies one of the top positions. Capital of Meghalaya, adorable Shillong lies at an altitude of 1,520 meters above sea level. The periphery of Shillong is garlanded by the Umiam gorge on the north, the Diengiei Hills in the northwest and by the impressive Assam valley in the northeast. Shillong has been rightly crowned with the title “Scotland of the East”; it has so many semblances with the Scottish Highlands. Shillong is situated at a distance of 104 km from Guwahati. From here it takes approximately 3 hours. Spending a vacation in the midst of a natural beauty embraced on all sides by the emerald hills will definitely be an enriching experience.

There are multitudes of tourist places in and around Shillong which will allow you to enjoy the exquisiteness of nature in all its splendour. Some tourist places of attractions are: Sweet falls, Crinoline falls, Beadon falls, Spread Eagle falls, Elephant falls, Shillong Peak, Ward’s Lake, Umiam or Barapani Lake, All Saint’s Church, State Museum, Golf Link, Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian, Lady Hydari Park, Cherrapunjee, Grotto Church, Botanical Garden, Dumpeep Peak, Gunner’s Fall etc.

At a distance of 8km from the heart of Shillong, lies the Sweet falls which has within its confines an exclusive picnic spot. Water falls from a height of more than 200 hundred feet into what seems like a deep gorge. About 10km away from Shillong is the Shillong Peak a must visited tourist spot. It is known to be the highest peak in Meghalaya, situated at a height of 1965m and embraced by tall pine trees on all sides. It offers a breathtaking view of the city below. The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian is another attraction which is situated at the heart of the city. The artificial lake; Ward’s Lake adorned with gardens on all sides catches the fancy of all those who visits the place. Here one can enjoy boating or can just while away their time. The Golf Link is undoubtedly the best place in Shillong. The green field on all side creates a soothing ambience. It is the second largest Golf Course in Asia and is also knwon as the Gleneagle of the East. The Elephant Falls situated at a distance of 12kms from the center of Shillong is another tourist place. The water cascade into a deep valley made of fern rocks.

The tall pine trees, the pleasant climate, the all pervading clouds, the green hills, the cascading and majestic waterfalls all contributes in making Shillong a heaven on earth.
