Kanheri Caves is a rock cut cave located within the deep forests of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The caves resemble the Buddhist art and culture and are carved from the basaltic rock outcropping. These caves belong to the period from first century B.C. to tenth century B.C. There are totally 109 caves with each of them having a stone plinth for bed.

During the time of Mauryas and Kushans, this place served as a center of learning. There were many inscriptions and epigraphs of Brahmi, Devanagari and Pahlavi scripts. There are also 34 unfinished paintings of Lord Buddha found on the ceiling of the cave. There are many small rivulets found here that makes it an ideal spot for weekend getaways.
