Gateway of India is a beautiful structure located in Apollo Bunder of South Mumbai. This is 85 feet in height and overlooks Arabian Sea and is one of the important tourist attractions in Mumbai. It was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911. The work of construction started on 31st March 1911 and completed in the year 1924.
The gateway was built of yellow basalt and reinforced concrete modeled on the Roman triumphal arch and the ancient architectural style of Gujarat. On either of side of there are big halls and opposite to it is the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The five jetties of the Gateway of India are opened to Atomic Research Center, commercial ferry services and Royal Bombay Yatch Club.
