Local Transportation in Madurai

Though Madurai is one of the corporations of Tamil Nadu, this is not a very big metropolitan city and so there is not local train or metro facility available. The choice available is to travel by bus, taxi or auto-rickshaw.

Transportation in Madurai by Bus

The buses are run by the government and are the cheapest modes of transport. However they are crowded during peak hours. These buses stop at particular places and so you have to enquire before boarding them. There are four main bus stands in Madurai namely Periyar Bus Stand, Shopping Complex Bus Stand, Arapalayam Bus Stand and Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand. Ask the conductor for route before you get into the buses.

Transportation in Madurai by Car

There are many cars and taxis available in Madurai and these also have some packages for visiting all the important places in Madurai. If you pay for full day trip they will take you to those places that include Meenakshi Temple, Alagar Temple, Thiruparankundram Hill, Naicker Mahal and Palamudircholai. There are many car rental companies and you can book them in advance. The hotels where you stay also arrange for these services.

Transportation in Madurai by Auto Rickshaws

You can see yellow color auto rickshaws in all the places. You can stop them at any place and hire them. These are usually not metered and so it is advisable to negotiate the fare before getting in. They will drop you at the doorsteps and so they are ideal for short distance travels.
