Thirumalai Nayak Palace was constructed in 1636 by the King Thirumalai Nayak of Nayaka dynasty who ruled Madurai from 1623 to 1653. The palace is built of Dravidian and Islamic styles and is considered to be one of the wonders of the south. The enclosed court is called Swarga Vilasam and it has a big audience chamber.

This palace is a national monument and is open to visitors from 9 AM to 5 PM. The light and sound show is organized here in evenings that depict the story of Silappathikaram. It is conducted in both languages Tamil and English.
