Belur Math is located on the bank of River Hoogly in Belur and is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. It is noted for its architecture that has a combination of all religion proclaiming the religious unity. The design of this building was envisioned by Swami Vivekananda and architect Swami Vijnananda. This temple was consecrated on 14th January 1938 on the day of Makar Sankranti.

The temple rises to a height of 112.5 feet and covers an area of about 32,900 square feet and is mainly built of chunar stone and cement. The pillars on either side represent the architectural style of Buddhism and the three umbrella like domes on the top of the building speaks of the Mughal and Rajput style. The circular portion of the entrance represents Hindu architecture. Within it there is a full size statue of Sri Ramakrishna that is seated over the lotus with hundred petals.

This is the place where the mortal remains of Swami Vivekananda were cremated in 1902. Beside the temple is the bel tree under which Swami Vivekananda used to spend his time and it was near that his body was cremated according to his wish.

There is a museum here known as Ramakrishna Museum that has the artifacts of Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. The coat of Vivekananda, the table of Sister Nivedita and pillow and bowls used by Ramakrishna and other objects used by them are displayed here.
