Dibrugarh Travel Guide

Set in the Eastern most province of the state of Assam and hemmed in by the Dhemaji district, part of Lakhimpur district, part of Sivasagar district and Arunachal Pradesh, Dibrugarh holds the merit of being the largest tea exporting town in the country. It is rightly called “Tea city of India” being embraced by stretches of emerald tea gardens and tea estates on all sides.  Dibrugarh is the commercial centre in the state of Assam and is the district headquarters of Lakhimpur and is occupied mostly by the Bengalis. Bamboo and wood work abounds here and being a large confined area, various species of wildlife can also be found.

Though not huge in number but, some places of attractions in Dibrugarh deserve praise and a stopover. Koli Aai Thaan, Barbarua Maidam, Lekai Chetia Maidam, Sarumechlow and Bromechow Maidam, Dehing Satra, Bahikhowa Maidam etc are some places that are worthy of your attention.

Dedicated to the daughter of the head priest of Dibaru Satra of Assam, the Koli Aai is a commendable tourist spot in Dibrugarh. The Koli Aai is believed to be bestowed with divine powers and this has a strong hold in the minds of the local people. The site of the two graveyards Barbarua Maidam, raised to commemorate the two officials of the Ahom Dynasty, is also an important tourist spot. At the Sarumechlow and Bromechow Maidam lies the graveyard of the two queens of King Sukhampha Khura of the Ahom regime. Similarly the Lekai Chetia Maidam and Bahikhowa Maidam consists the graveyard of Lekai Chetia an officer of the Ahom Kingdom and Bahikhowa Dasarath Dowerah chief of the army staff of Ahoms. The Dehing Satra is basically a ruin on the banks of the Dehing River. It was a very famous satra that was prevalent during the reign of Ahom King Rajeswar Singha. Not to be missed is the Chang Bunglows, which is probably architectural piece left by the British.

If you are planning a tour to Assam, a trip to Dibrugarh will enrich your tour of the land. Owing to the rich commercial business of tea, Dibrugarh has over the years made an admirable position in the list of Tourist destinations in North East.
