Zoramthanga Biography

Zoramthanga is an Indian politician from Mizoram, who currently serves as chief minister. He took oath as the 5th CM of Mizoram on 15 December 2018. It’s his third as CM of Mizoram, after serving two consecutive terms since 1998. He is the leader of Mizo National Front in Mizoram. During his first term as MLA he served as the Minister of Finance and Education in 1987. His party lost the 2008 Assembly elections to the Indian National Congress, and lost both the constituencies in which he contested. He was second in command to Laldenga during the secession movement of Mizo National Front, and later became the party leader.

 

Zoramthanga was born on 13 July 1944 in Samthang, Assam Province, British India. He was born as the 7th of 8 children of the couple, Darphunga and Vanhnuaichhingi. His primary education was done at middle school at South Khawbung, and from seventh standard onwards he studied at Champhai Gandhi Memorial High School. He finished schooling in 1960 and later completed his graduation from D.M. College, Manipur.

 

He got involved with Mizo Freedom Movement started in 1966, and stayed at a jungle. He served as secretary for Run Bung Area for next three years. In 1979 he became the vice president. He was arrested by the army and held at the Assam Rifles Quarter Guard during the insurgency. When the Mizo National Front formed the government in 1987 under the leadership of Laldenga, he served as the Minister of Finance and Education. It was his first term as MLA. Since then he has been fully active in state politics. He became the President of the Mizo National Front when the leader died, and later served as CM for three terms.
