Vrindavan Lal Verma Biography

Vrindavan Lal Verma was a noted author belonging to Hindi literature. He lived during the period, 9 January 1889 - 23 February 1969, and during his active years he wrote many novels and plays. For his outstanding contributions towards the field of Hindi literature, government of India honoured him with Padma Bhushan. Agra University presented him with honorary D. Lit also. He is a recipient of Soviet Land Nehru Award. As a novelist, Jhansi Ki Rani is his major work.

Vrindavan Lal Verma hailed from Mauranipur, Jhansi District during British rule in India. He was born on 9 January 1889 into a noble Srivastava Kayasthya family. He completed his graduation from Victoria College, Gwalior and LLB from Agra College, after which he started practising in Jhansi. Since young he was drawn towards Hindu mythological stories as well as stories and incidents related to Indian history, and later both these subjects deeply influenced his writings as well. He authored many historic and social dramas as well as novels, for which he is remembered most.

His masterpiece, Mriganayani, set at the end of the 15th century in Gwalior told the story of queen Mrignayani and the king Man Singh Tomar. His first original work - Mahatma Buddha Ka Jivan Charitra was published in 1908. He was quite regular in publishing books since mid-1920s, and in the 1950s, he adapted many of his novels to write plays.

Some of his historical novels include - Jhansi ki Rani, Gadh Kundar, Madavji Sindhia, Tute Kante, Musahibju, Mriganayani, Bhuvan Vikram, Kachnar, Virata ki Padmini and Ahilya Bai. His social novels include - Prem ki Bheni, Kabhi na Kabhi, Amar Bel, Sangam, Kundali Chakra etc. He also published many short stories, and an autobiography work titled - Apni Kahani.
