Virendra Kumar Biography

Virendra Kumar is an Indian politician and cabinet minister representing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A 6-term MP from Madhya Pradesh, he is a prominent politician associated with the party. Following the reshuffle of Modi’s government in 2017 September, he has been inducted to the cabinet and given the portfolio, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He is a Chairperson of Standing Committee on Labour and Member of General Purpose Committee. Got elected to Lok Sabha from Sagar constituency during the period 1996-2009, he later got elected from Tikamgarh constituency of Madhya Pradesh two times.

Virendra Kumar hails from Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. He was born in 1954. He was born into a poor family belonging to SC. His father owned a cycle repairing shop and young Virendra Kumar used to assist him. From a cycle repairing worker to a Union minister, Kumar’s rise in BJP politics has been gradual. He was actively involved with students’ politics during his younger days. Virendra Kumar's father Amar Singh was also a Jan Sangh leader who unsuccessfully contested in elections.

Virendra Kumar was given the party ticket from Sagar Lok Sabha in 1996, then a SC reserved constituency. There was no turning back after that. He won the seat again in 1998, in 1999 and 2004. He also got elected to Lok Sabha from Tikamgarh (SC) during 2009 and 2014 elections.

Though he is a prominent figure in politics now, he is very humble in his real life, who has not forgotten his past. It’s a common sight of the residents to see him riding a scooter and sometimes a tractor. Meeting common man and talking to them at roadside and wayside tea stalls is a common sight. His brother-in-law, Dr. Gauri Shankar Shejwar is presently a minister in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan cabinet.
