Vinodini Nilkanth Biography

Vinodini Nilkanth was a writer of Gujarati language, who lived in the 20th century. A renowned Gujarati writer, she was also known as a translator, and academic, who gave some significant contributions towards children’s literature. She also wrote columns in different types of journals, and was a teacher by profession. She authored essays, short stories, essays etc. Vinodini Nilkanth belongs to a family of renowned writers and social reformers, best known for their contributions since 19th century. In the present-generation, Pico Iyer from her family is an internationally known author. Vinodini Ramanbhai Nilkanth lived during the period, 9 February 1907 – 29 November 1987.

 

Vinodini Ramanbhai Nilkanth was born on 9 February 1907 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, into a family of reformers and writers. Her grandfather Mahipatram Rupram Nilkanth was a social worker, reformer and author. Her grandmother Rupkunwarba was also a social reformer, who supported her husband for his social activities. Her father Ramanbhai Neelkanth was a well-known Indian writer belonging to Gujarati literature, best known for his humour works. He also served as a mayor of Ahmedabad. Her mother Vidyagauri Nilkanth, who was the second wife of Ramanbhai also turned a social reformer after marriage, apart from being a successful author. She along with her sister became the first female graduate from Gujarat. Following her parents’ footsteps, Vinodini too landed into the world of letters and writings. Her sister Sarojini has also authored a few books.

 

She was an academic and administrator, who headed Vanita Vishram, an institute in Ahmedabad. She also served as the Headmistress of the Municipal Girls High School in Ahmedabad. Her works include – Kadalivan (novel), Shishuranjana, Mendini Manjari, Balakoni Duniyama Dokiyu, Safarachand, Padchand Kathiyaro (children’s literature), Aarasini Bhitarma, Karpasi ane Biji Vartao, Dil Dariavna Moti, Angulino Sparsh (short story collections) etc.
