Victor George Biography

Victor George was a famous photojournalist from Kerala. He was the chief photographer of the Malayala Manorama newspaper, when he died while photographing landslides in Kerala in 2001. He was 46 years old when he died in a landslide in Venniyani Mala, Thodupuzha in Idukki district. His corpse was found in the debris after a two-day search. He was survived by his wife Lilly and two children, Aswathy and Neil. As a photojournalist, he came to limelight for the first time after capturing the photos of 1986 National games held at Delhi. In 1985, he received UNICEF Award and was selected as one of the Top 10 Photographs in a competition jointly held by UNICEF and Information and Broadcasting Ministry. He also won many photograph competitions during his lifetime.

 

Ace lens man of Malayalam journalism, Victor George was born on April 10, 1955 in Kanakkary village of Kottayam district, Kerala. He completed his graduation in English literature before he took photography as his profession. He was introduced to this art by his brother. In 1981 Victor joined Malayala Manorama newspaper. He worked with Delhi Bureau during 1985-1990. In 1986 when national games were held in Delhi, he was assigned the job of photojournalist by Malayala Manorama daily. His work was critically well acclaimed, and brought him accolades. His shots of the swimmer Anita Sood with Kavita Sood earned him a lot of praises.

 

He later worked as a photographer for South Asian Federation Games held at Kolkata in 1989. His photograph of the Indian relay team dropping the baton in a disastrous finish got noticed too. In 1990 he was promoted to Chief Photographer post by the daily, and he was associated with the same daily till his death in 2001. Ace photographer was chasing his pet obsession, the monsoon, when he was buried alive by a landslide caused by the torrential rains in July 2001.

 

A man who looked at the world through his camera, his works, particularly of raining monsoon, are still regarded timeless. For two years Victor had been working on his "rain book". He travelled to Kanyakumari and Kovalam and the Shankhumukham seashore of Thiruvananthapuram, to capture some of the beautiful monsoon pictures.
