Rooma Mehra Biography

Rooma Mehra is a noted writer, poet and journalist. She works as a freelancer and writes columns for the Indian Express. She is also an artist known as a painter and a sculptor. Mehra is a self-taught artist with a social conscience and till now she has done 11 solo exhibitions to exhibit her lovely piece of art. Till now she has published three books on poem collections – Sunshadow, Reaching out and For you. Das ausländische Stück des Grases – is a compilation of her newspaper articles on travel.

 

Rooma Mehra was born on 24 January 1967. She was awarded Government of India's Merit Scholarship by the USIS. She topped in the Mittelstufe-I examination conducted by the Max Mueller Bhawan in German Language. As an artist, she won Shankar's International Painting Competition at age 13. She earned Government of India's Merit Scholarship for studying Fine Arts at the Art Students League of New York, U.S.A. 1986. Her name was included in the International WHO'S WHO of Professional women by American Biographical Institute, North Carolina and WHO of South Asian women writers by the University of Washington Libraries, Seattle, U.S.A.

 

She was awarded Certificate of Honour by Skylark Poetry Academy for her poetry collection. She was the semi-finalist of "1989 Northern American Open Poetry contest" by the National Library of Poetry where more than 12,000 poets participated. As an artist, her first solo exhibition of paintings was conducted in 1982 at AIFACS, New Delhi. She also conducted solo exhibitions at Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi in 1985 and 1989. Since then she has conducted about 11 exhibitions.
